Clearwater Beach is one of the most visited beaches in the United States — millions of tourists hit the strip every year, and most of them are eating out. But how clean are those beachfront restaurants really?

We pulled the public inspection records for 649 restaurants across Clearwater and Clearwater Beach, covering 1,067 inspections from DBPR (Florida’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation). Here’s what the data says. If you’re new to our scoring, check how to read inspection grades.

47% of Clearwater restaurants earned an A grade — slightly below the statewide average — see our city rankings for comparisons. That means more than half have room for improvement, and 31 restaurants are currently failing.

How Do the Famous Spots Stack Up?

Clearwater Beach is known for its iconic restaurants. Here’s how the local legends scored:

Frenchy's Cafe
41 Baymont St — The original
97.8
Cesare at the Beach
794 S Gulfview Blvd
97.5
Island Way Grill
20 Island Way
96
Columbia Restaurant
1241 Gulf Blvd
92.8
Palm Pavilion
10 Bay Esplanade
92.8
Clear Skyz Cafe
490 Mandalay Ave
92.5
Frenchy's South Beach Cafe
351 Gulfview Blvd
91.8
Crabby's Beach Walk & Grill
333 S Gulfview Blvd
91
Caretta on the Gulf
500 Mandalay Ave — Sandpearl Resort
83.3

Frenchy’s Cafe — the original location — now leads the famous spots at 97.8 (A grade), followed closely by Cesare at the Beach at 97.5 and Island Way Grill at 96. Columbia Restaurant — the Tampa Bay institution since 1905 — has slipped to a B at 92.8 but remains solid.

Interestingly, the South Beach Frenchy’s location has dropped to 91.8 (B grade), while the original has climbed to an A. Same brand, different kitchen, and the roles have reversed.

The Lowest-Scoring in Clearwater

These Clearwater restaurants currently have the lowest InspectFL scores. All three worst offenders are now F-graded.

Pierogi Grill & Steakhouse
Steakhouse — Score: 36

Papa's NY Diner
Café/Breakfast — Score: 46.8
F
India King Tandoori & Wine
Indian — Score: 53
F
Caretta on the Gulf
Sandpearl Resort — Score: 83.3
C

Pierogi Grill & Steakhouse sits at the bottom with a 36 (F grade), followed by Papa’s NY Diner at 46.8 and India King Tandoori & Wine at 53. All three have dropped from C grades to outright failing.

What’s the Most Common Category?

Clearwater’s restaurant scene in Pinellas County is diverse, but here’s what dominates:

Café/Breakfast
70
American
63
Mexican/Latin
61
Pizza/Italian
54
Fast Food
40
Seafood
20

For a beach town, seafood ranks surprisingly low at just 20 restaurants. Breakfast and brunch spots dominate — which makes sense for a tourist market.

The Mandalay Ave Report Card

Mandalay Avenue is the main drag on Clearwater Beach. Almost every restaurant a tourist walks past is on this strip. Here’s how they scored:

3 Daughters Brewing
381 Mandalay Ave
100
Zoe's Gelato and Creamery
399 Mandalay Ave
100
Starbucks
400 Mandalay Ave
99
Shipwreck
647 Mandalay Ave
99.8
Clear Skyz Cafe
490 Mandalay Ave
92.5

Good news for tourists — Mandalay Ave is mostly clean. The majority of restaurants on the strip are A or high-B grade.

The Bottom Line

Clearwater Beach restaurants are cleaner than average when it comes to the tourist strip. The iconic spots like Frenchy’s Cafe, Cesare at the Beach, and Island Way Grill all earn A grades. But venture off the main strip into greater Clearwater, and the picture gets much worse — Pierogi Grill, Papa’s NY Diner, and India King are all now F-graded. For context, see how Miami Beach and St. Petersburg compare.
